Your motherboard won't support it, you GPU will bottleneck it and your computer will fry.

He doesn't have the right socket.
He doesn't have DDR3 and;
He doesn't have an i7.

What you need to do make is look at either a socket LGA 1156 (i5) or a LGA 1366 (i7)

I would suggest waiting a bit longer until the 6Core i9's are out. The prices of i5's and 17's will drop a heap!

EDIT: Forgot to mention you will need a compatible motherboard with the same sockets i have mentioned above, whichever you chose.

Buy a whole new one. There's no point in upgrading a bad HP Desktop.

You need to find out if your case, is big enough for a ATX form factor motherboard, socket 1366.
Then see if your PSU is good enough for your future upgrades and if it will support your future graphics card(s). I would recommend a 600W brand PSU in case you buy a high end graphics card, for a mid end i'd recommend a 500W one.
Maybe you can keep the HDD if it's good enough, the DVD RW and floppy if you use such a thing.

Now for the parts you will need:
- Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor - $294.99
- Motherboard socket 1366, ATX form factor
- DDR3, i would recommend a 3 or 6 Gb kit tripple channel
- CPU after market cooler compatible with the 1366 pin socket
- graphics card, mid end i'd go for GTX 275/HD 4890, high end GTX 470/HD 5870 and low end 9800GT/HD 4830 which ever is cheaper/available.

PSU if you need a new one, check this one out: CORSAIR CMPSU-750HX 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Modular Active PFC - $149.99 (but it might be overkill, depends on the other components)
Specs:
+3.3V@25A,
+5V25A,
+12V@60A,
-12V@0.8A,
+5VSB@3A

Me too. Btw there are rumors that the new quad Phenoms are unlockable to 6 cores. wink.gif I'd go AMD now for one simple reason - they stick to ONE DAMN SOCKET for 4 years. With the Core i7/i5/i3 Intel released THREE new sockets for ONE new processor lineup. That in my book is fail, oh and the lame push pins which annoyed the heck out of me on my Core 2 Duo, i can't possibly understand why they keep using them.

A Core 2 Duo based Xeon is the same as the normal C2D but rated for more abuse, so it usually overclocks higher. It is still behind the i7, but IMO you don't actually need an i7 to play games in high quality. The number one ingredient is still the video card.

I thought a Core i7 needs triple channel DDR3 in order to run smoothly?

The new desktop variant of AMD's hexacore is indeed a huge bitchslap at Intel, the prices are incredible low with the highest one being only about 300€, their performance finally beats down a nice amount of i7s (the very high end ones are still higher rated, but their market share is only very small anyway because the prices are simply ridiculous) and they are surprisingly efficient. Their new counterpart to Intel's Turbo Boost looks also very interesting, it ignores the C states and takes the actual load of the cores into account, it makes use of the fact that each core can be clocked absolutely independently and everything can be handled at hardware level.

I wouldn't recommend you and no other to buy a Xeon and use it as desktop processor.
The Xeon processor is a very good processor for a server. I didn't see anyone who bought a Xeon for his desktop PC.

Just build a core i5 computer. That is your best solution. Get a core i5 dual core, a hm55 motherboard, some ddr3 1333 ram, a dx11 video card, and anything else you may need. THat would be your ideal computer.

My System:
Motherboard: Biostar A780L
CPU: Athlon II X2 250
Hard Drive: Seagate 7200.7 200gb
Memory: 2GB DDR2 800mhz
GPU: Sapphire 4870 Toxic 512mb
PSU: BFG GS-550

For gaming, go either i5 or AMD Phenoms. You will not use those 8 hyperthreaded cores in any game for at least 2 years from now. Or... never?

If you work at compositing motion pictures or doing some CG work then go with i7 (or wait for i9).

I agree, i7 is an overkill for good gaming. I say this now because the prices are really high right now. Wait like a couple of years then go for i7. For now, stay with i5.
